How to use our traps

Proffteiner traps are designed to deliver maximum catch with minimal effort.
Our traps come nearly fully assembled and require only simple adjustments before being put in the water. Below are general usage guidelines based on feedback from professional and recreational fishermen across the country.

Preparation

Before deploying the traps:

  • Tighten the entrance flaps
  • Attach the bait bag (not included)

All new traps may release a slight odor that can deter catch for the first couple of days. For best results, leave the traps soaking in the sea for a day or two before adding bait and starting regular hauling.

Bait and Deployment

For crab fishing, use fresh whitefish such as cod, pollock, ling, or tusk. These types of bait release a natural and steady scent that attracts crabs without losing effectiveness too quickly. Fresh bait maintains consistent catch rates and reduces the chance of small fish or debris entering the trap.

For lobster fishing, herring, mackerel, or aged fermented fish work best. Lobster responds strongly to intense odor, especially in cold water or in conditions with low oxygen, where scent spreads more slowly.

Position the bait high in the trap to improve scent dispersion through the water column and keep it away from bottom-dwelling scavengers.

Most fishermen achieve the best results when the trap remains in the water for 1–2 days, allowing the scent to fully attract catch without the bait losing effectiveness.
